NEW BUILD WORKED GREAT AFTER 1ST CHECK, UNTILL....

Pars Mancuso - W3PAR

Ok, Maybe some hints or suggestions???????.
Received it yesterday, started the build this morning after 08;00.
My new build was up and running just fine before lunch.
Played with several different keys to input as well as touch pads, everything marvelous.
Started reading more and more in the manual and was playing with different set ups, including Quick Start.
Alas, later in the evening, after talking to my neighbor about his "need" for one I thought I would learn more about the wifi, and other transmitters.
So, now somehow Ive got it "looping a restart", that says the following after the version info:

1st.   Select Modus:
         Transceiver
         WIFI TRX
         Quick Start

2nd.  Not connected
         WiFi  Not Conf

3rd.   Start WiFi TRX
         IP Broadcast

4th.   A.        18wpm

5th.   LoRa Initial Succesfu????l / Unsuccesfull ?????    (too small to read and flashes too quickly

I think the above is accurate, but it does loop through them quickly.

Then repeats turning off and back on with version info and cycles through 1-5 over and over. I have tried holding the black knob down with the switch off and on and it will put it in Hardware configuration to calibrate battery etc. I have gone through each to no avail or influence on the loop as soon as I punch out of the Hardware configuration it just starts looping again. .

It was working so great.. I had it going through the various training modes with the (each word twice)  and was able to set up the (stop/next/ repeat) and played with most everything with complete success.
But I wanted to demo to my neighbor and show him how we could use them together with the WiFi or the LoRa. I probably had the quick start on from previously playing with the different functions. And then all of a sudden it just started Looping the above.
Ive tried both the 12 and 14 both on and off.
So.....?????
I was really looking forward to taking this on a trip next week and spending some time with the code training. I really want to download a file to listen at work but Loop, Loop, Loop.
Battery seems fine, and Im at a loss.
Please Help...SOS.

thanks for any considerations.

Did you try completely disconnecting the battery and waiting 5 min.?  This could possibly give you a cold boot and restart normally.

This seem to be some unfortunate combination of the Quick Start option with some other weird behavior, that I cannot identify yet.
I think the only way to get rid of it is to re-flash the firmware through USB (with Joe’s utility, see https://github.com/joewittmer/Morserino-32-Firmware-Updater), using the „erase“ option (there is no other way to get rid of the „Quick Start“ parameter).

To do this, you execute the update from a command lien with the following command (this is the way to do it on Windows, you can also do it on a Mac):

update_m32.exe COM5 115200 morse_3_vxxx.xxxx.xxx.bin erase

(You need to replace the Com port with the one actually used on your machine, and use the correct file name of the firmware binary file).

Before you do this, can you please make a video of the display while it is looping? I hope that this helps me to understand why it is rebooting ….

Say Willi,

Yes, I can and will make a video of it looping.
Please let me know where to send it.

I will be using an Apple iMac to do the update.
If there is anyway to guide by a step by step procedure that would sure help facilitate the operation.

Thanks for a speedy assist.  I was sure having fun with it all day.
Cant wait to get it back operating.

Thanks Bob,

Yes, I have unplugged the battery, had a cup of coffee, started cleaning up the shack as I was supposed to do before the build, waited at least10 minutes.
Somewhat of a discussion with spouse about  going out for chicken and rabbit feed. Coffee is really good, thinking of 3rd cup.

I was hoping maybe someone wouldn't mind Skyping /FaceTime/ Google Meet etc to help me walk through the upload and reset with iMacOS interface.

I am using the the same cable for charging the system at USB 13 port and have not seen the Morserino device recognized on my iMac. It will charge just fine, orange light etc. But nothing coming up on the finder that says its connected to another device.

No difference with the looping when the battery is plugged back in and yes the usb/power cable was unplugged for the testing that you suggested.

Thanks for the try

Perhaps another way would be to try and constantly double click the black knob while it is looping. With a bit of luck you might enter the parameter menu, where you can disable the Quick Start option...

Tried repetitively with no success.

Well, then a re-flash seems to be the only option left…

One more thing to be aware of should you re-flash with the erase option:
- flashing a brand new (or erased) halter module will take pretty long - you will see a message not eh computer screen that the module has been sent a hard reset, you’ll see a tiny message flicker on teh display, and the nothing happens for half a minute or so.
This is normal: at first start the firmware checks if a virtual file system is already on teh system, and if it is not (and it won’t be with an empty memory), it will create and format the file system. This takes a while….

Hello,

i ran into exactly the same problem after simply starting the WIFI transceiver without configuring it before.
Constantly double clicking the black knob lead me into the battery configuration menu only. After exiting this menu, the loop will restart.
Have not tried to re-flash the unit yet. Are there any further infos available yet, to solve the reboot problem without flashing the unit?

FYI: after some hours of investigating on how to re-flash the morserino i finally was able to successfully re-flash the device. Everything is ok again. For a morserino-noob like me it was a little difficult to find out that i had to push the prg button on the heltec module several times to accept the download of the firmware upgrade. I had to add the "erase" option in the command line of the windows update software btw. :) Now everything is working again and i am happy now. But i believe it is a serious problem if someone is playing with the WIFI option without a proper configuration before. I remember that i started the lora transceiver before and thereafter i tried to start the WIFI transceiver which lead into the continuous reboot.

Edit to add: previously i tried to re-flash the device without the erase option, but without success. The windows update software endet successfully, but the morserino still had the reboot problem. The erase option was the solution.

Peter,

Did you also set the option „Quick Start“ before??

Hello Willi,

i can't really remember if i messed with this „Quick Start“ option before. I think no, but i am not sure anymore. The last thing i remember was that i took a look at the WIFI trcvr options and possibly started the transceiver with default settings.

I was thinking that without the Quick Start option a reboot should always succeed...

Hi Peter,

I’m glad to hear you recovered the firmware in your unit.

I am not aware of any need to press the RST button while using the update_m32 utility to upload firmware, but there certainly could be something I misunderstand... If we can come up with a sequence that causes the failure, that might help.

Hello Joe,

i copied the bug once again, by setting on "Quick Start" and then simply start the (still not configured) WIFI transceiver. The unit is again rebooting the 5 steps mentioned in the original post above.
So i have to re-flash it again. I put a video attachment to this post, so you will be able to see the reboot (Sorry for the poor quality).
Furthermore i get an unexpected error when trying to flash the unit without pressing the PRG button (14) on the heltec module.
So i always have to start the windows command (update_m32.exe) first and right after the start i have to depress the PRG button 14 on the heltec module to get it done.
Now i have successfully re-flashed the unit the second time and got rid of the rebooting problem.

I was able to enter the state by also the reverse order of 1st starting the WIFI transceiver (still not configured) and then 2nd setting "Quick Start" to on.

To recover the unit I only had to run the update_m32 application with the erase option. The programming process is certainly time sensitive (which makes sense as the unit is rebooting) and found that I needed to run the program as soon as the main 'splash' menu appeared on the Heltec LCD screen. Otherwise, I did not need to press the PRG button or do anything else special. I went through this a couple times. Although, I don't see any harm in pressing the PRG button it seems to be the connected to the red button on my board.

Hope that helps.

Hello again Joe,

at first thanks alot for the quick update. I can report, that i am still having difficulties to program the heltec with a new firmware. With the earlier reboot-issue, i mentioned that i need to depress the PRG button in some stage of the 5 step reboot progress to be able to get the firmware uploaded to the device. So now i have tried to upload the fixed firmware to the morserino with exactly the same problem. When i am doing nothing but starting the windows command to update the morserino, then every time i get an unexpected error after some time. I tried it really hard, some 10 times i believe. Every time i got this error in the Windows CMD command screen. So as soon as i start the Windows update command, i can see the Heltec module flashing with different screens, so at least something is happening. It looked like the earlier reboot-issue, but after the error in the Windows command screen has appeared, the Morserino showed a normal boot with the existing old firmware and was fully functional. Furthermore i noticed, that when i tried to upload the firmware too often after all the errors, the windows command showed the error permanently, regardless of wether the Morserino has been connected to the pc or not, so only a Windows restart helped to get the update command to work again. So i tried it again with depressing the PRG button on the Heltec module and noticed that it was harder to find the correct timing to get the device to accept the firmware upload, but after some tries it was possible to successfully upload the new firmware. So i don't really know why i need to use this PRG button and you are not. May it have something to do with different versions of the Heltec module? However, i managed to have the latest version of the firmware installed, so i am happy :) Just a FYI :) Thanks!
